2012: Tapachula expects glorious days for tourism

Tourism officials in Tapachula, which is located near the archaeological site of Izapa, are expecting a surge in tourism next year. Ancient astronomers at Izapa is by some people believed to have initiated the Long Count. According to John Major Jenkins the Long Count is more like a countdown to a celestial event that was conceptualized at Izapa according to him. In this view the Long Count(down) ends with the winter solstice sun rising in the center of the dark rift of the Milky Way and hence ending a long cycle (the so-called precession of the equinoxes). Thousands of people have bought into this idea and many of them are likely to visit Izapa one year from now. I will for sure not be there…
